CHROMATIC METHENYISMS (Arpeggios ala Matini) Volume 5 - Chromafills (122-121 splits)
In this chapter of my “Chromatic Methenyisms” book series I will be exploring a few very easy and effective techniques for chromatic melodic ornamentation in the style of Pat Metheny which I call “Chromafills 122-121 splits.” I will be demonstrating how we can apply such chromatic mechanisms over 2nd Inversion 4-note arpeggios as well as the 7 modes of the major scale and the 5 modes of the minor pentatonic scale.
By establishing melodic skeletons with the specific 122-121 note position (1 note on the 6th string, 2 notes on the 5th string, 2 notes on the 4th string, 1 note on the 3rd string, 2 notes on the second string and 1 note on the first string) we can open the door to some very intricate and fun ways of chromatically ornamenting the original notes of our melodic structure.
The accompanying video masterclass contains all examples performed at tempo as well as slowed down and in the transcription you will find a detailed description of the specific articulation and phrasing used to achieve the melodic sensibility and feel of Metheny.
The video tutorial will also cover in great depth the mechanics, detailed construction and concepts behind the application of this style of melodic ornamentation.
This is also a great technique for combining the inside sound of the basic four chord tones of every harmony with the outside/altered sonic textures provided to us by the chromatic ornamentation.
