CHROMATIC METHENYISMS (Break Tracks) - The Evolution of Pat Metheny’s Solo Break on Third Wind

In this chapter of my “Chromatic Methenyisms” book series I will be exploring the evolution of Pat’s famous 4 measure solo break on the song “Third Wind” which was originally recorded by the Pat Metheny Group on the album “Still Life (talking)” in 1987.

I will follow the evolution of these iconic four measures from the first recording and throughout all 13 publicly available recordings (audio or video) of “Third Wind” that exist out there.

Here, l am presenting each solo break with a detailed transcription (tab and standard notation) and links to hear the original version as played by Pat Metheny.

Moreover, I have extracted specific essential melodic motifs that appear in Pat’s improvisation vocabulary within each version of the solo break and have developed full scale melodic and technical exercises from them which are presented in great detail in the PDF and Video Masterclass. This can allow each one of us to achieve a deeper understanding of the architecture behind the magical sound of Metheny and have the needed insight for implementing these melodic structures in our own playing.
