GEOMETRY OF HARMONIC TENSION (Modern ii-V7-I Chordal Phrases)

This study/video masterclass is the continuation to Part 1 of the Geometry of Harmonic Tension book series. Here I will be presenting different ideas as to how we can use the Modal RRL and RLR voicings and their contrasting tensions in conjunction with basic reference chord shapes when playing over ii-V7-I harmonic passages.

This approach to “outside playing” is based purely on the geometry and visual architecture of a chordal structure (abstract geometrical shapes that can be easily recognized on the fretboard) and does not particularly relate to the conventional harmonic principles and teachings of the western music tradition.

The study consists of 7 different (4 measure) modern chordal phrases over a ii-V7-I progression in the key of C Major which are analyzed and studied in great detail to expose their architecture, function and degree of tension.
