MODAL QUADRANGULATION (Chasing Trains - Coltrane Changes Workout)
In this short melodic study I illustrate how we can apply all the concepts and ideas presented in my book: MODAL QUADRANGULATION (Melodic Phrases and Exercise Ideas using Intervals of a 4th) to build a modern melodic workout over "Coltrane Changes" - a reharmonization technique that John Coltrane developed over a basic ii-V-I progression that passes through three different tonal centers.
This type of modern melodic phrasing, which uses the interval of a 4th as the primary building block and architectural element of the melodic line is ideal for covering intricate harmonic movements and responding to the swift turns and twists of such sonic changes.
The harmonic cycle consist of going a half-step higher from the starting ii-7 chord and making the new harmony Dominant 7. Then we resolve the new Dominant to its own tonic (maj7). From there we move an interval of a minor 3rd above and construct another Dominant 7 chord. That Dominant also resolves to its own tonic (maj7) and with one more minor 3rd movement we will arrive at the original Dominant 7 chord of the key we started in and thus be able to resolve to the true tonic (maj7).
In the key of C major the progression will be: Dmin7 Eb7 | Abmaj7 B7 | Emaj7 G7 | Cmaj7
The study consists of 5 intricate phrases over the Coltrane Changes in the key of C major that use the interval of a 4th as their main melodic architectural unit. These phrases are ideal for endurance, stamina and finger independence as well as building modern angular (non be-bop) vocabulary on the instrument.
