MELODIC ICEBERGS (Melodic Phrases and Exercise Ideas in The Style of Jonathan Kreisberg)

In this book I will be exploring a wide range of phrasing concepts and exercise ideas inspired by the innovative and unique melodic idiom of the great modern jazz guitarist - Jonathan Kreisberg.

Each single “Iceberg” idea presented in the study is directly inspired by melodic passages and phrases I have transcribed and studied over the years while exploring Jonathan’s improvisatory style within his various musical projects.

Once a particular intervallic structure or phrase architecture captivates my attention and curiosity I try to work out and study how it moves and inverts all over the fretboard throughout the different positions, string sets, modes and scalar systems.

Some of these transpositions are done completely diatonically while others are transposed and inverted within my system of “LCR” (left, central, right) - 3 notes per string note positioning. Such way of visualizing the fretboard favors the function of each note as one of the three elements it can be within the mode and particular string it is placed on instead of its relationship to the original diatonic intervals found within the phrase. This system is explained in detail in the accompanying video tutorial as well as most of my other available publications.

The accompanying video masterclass contains all examples performed at tempo as well as slowed down. In it, I will also be presenting many different ideas as to how we can further expand and develop interesting ways to practice each “iceberg” in order to fully take advantage of its melodic offerings.
