Undercover Substitutions (evolution of the minor blues)
The concepts and ideas presented in this harmonic study are among some of my favorite ways to re-harmonize tunes as well as sonically contrast and spice-up standard chord progressions.
In the following pages I will show you the standard 12 bar minor blues form (key of C) and some of my favorite voicings I use when comping over it. Then I will present you with a re-harmonization of the form using the "undercover substitutions"method in two different versions.
The first version will be the combination of the original harmony with the newly selected substitutions which can showcase the possibilities for harmonic shading and coloration against the standard chord progression. The second version will contain only the substitutions without the original harmony so it can take the minor blues to a whole new harmonic landscape.
